The east coast
Beyond Whyalla, the east coast is an unassuming string of sheltered beaches and fishing villages, many with attractive historic architecture, nestled beneath towering grain silos – the sort of places you could drive through without a second glance or else get waylaid beachcombing for a week. Cowell is known for its King George whiting and as the world’s largest source of black “nephrite” jade, though not much of it is in evidence, since it’s largely exported uncut. Arno Bay, Port Neill and the larger Tumby Bay all boast clean, quiet beaches, good fishing and decent accommodation.
